How Fudge Is Made

Making perfect melt-in-your-mouth fudge is not easy. 

Have you ever wondered what makes fudge...fudge? There's nothing else quite like it. It seems like magic––but it turns out there's some pretty cool science behind it. 

Fudge is made of a ton of tiny sugar crystals. And when those crystals come together at the right time––and with the right ingredients––the result is a perfectly smooth, decadent treat. 

Making fudge is an art form... and although it can be tricky, what goes into it is actually pretty simple. 

The main ingredients in fudge are sugar, butter and milk. There are different variations of this in every recipe, but these three things are at the heart of every batch of fudge. 

So how do we turn those basic ingredients into nineteen different flavors of fudge? 

That's where the science comes in! 

Here are the three main steps in the fudge-making process: 

1. Heat up the ingredients (sugar, butter, milk...) until they become a smooth mixture. 

2. Remove the mixture from heat and stir in your extra ingredients (like chocolate, if you're making classic fudge!) 

3. Once the mixture reaches the right texture, it's time to take it off the heat, pour it into your pan, and let it cool. And then you wait until it sets up and becomes fudge! 

And here's the hard part: each step has to be done at just the right time––and in just the right way. 

It really is an art form! And at Life is Sweet, we've spent years perfecting it.
