Peeps: A Candy Cultural Phenomenon!

These little chicks (and bunnies) are everywhere!

When it comes to Peeps, there are some pretty strong opinions out there.

Some people LOVE them. Do you know anyone Peeps-obsessed? When Easter comes around, they'll stock up on every color...and they probably buy them for other holidays, too.

But some people hate them. And I mean really hate them. Everything from the crunchy, sugary coating to the sticky marshmallow center.

Whether you can't stand them or can't get enough of them...there's one thing pretty much everyone can agree on. These little candies are famous!

For example, Peeps brand sells a ton of merchandise––from bunny-emblazoned socks, to chick-themed home goods, to these (absolutely adorable) Peeps plushes, which we carry at Life is Sweet!

But it doesn't stop there.

In 2017, the World Peeps Eating Championship was held in National Harbor, Maryland. Contestants went head-to-head to see who could eat the most peeps––and the winner ate 255 peeps in five minutes. Can you imagine?

You may hate Peeps; but there aren't many candies that have inspired an entire World Championship.

The divisive treats also take center stage in many "Peep Shows" around the country, which ask contestants to create their very best Peep dioramas. A quick online search will show you all of the amazing things Peep lovers have come up with.

Check out these awesome dioramas made by one of our customers last year!

So, maybe we've got you thinking now...

Why are Peeps so popular?

It's hard to tell. The Peeps we know today have been around since the early 1950s, and they're still produced by the same company: Just Born.

Over the years, new colors, shapes and flavors have been added to the roster. But seventy years later, they're still pretty much the same treat!

Maybe it's the divisiveness of Peeps that makes them so culturally significant... or the fact that they're just a lot of fun (to eat, to look at, to share on Easter)!

Whatever the reason...Peeps are here to stay. And we're glad about that!

What do you think?

I’m a Peeps lover, especially the hot tamale flavored!! I’m always buying at least 4 at a time during the season. If they get marked down after Easter, I try to get more! 😊😊

Not a huge fan but they’re definitely the cutest Easter candy for sure! (Wouldn’t want to eat 255 of them though!)
